Since everyone is now allowed to go back into the city, this blog has finished its purpose to let everyone who was stuck outside of New Orleans, and more specifically mid-city and lakeview, to see what was going on. I hope it was really helpful, and if anyone has anything to say you can comment and that automatically emails me - make sure you leave your email in the comment if you'd like a response. Special request from the commentator to the last blog entry. These are post-Katrina but before the flooding was finished, and from two different cameras. The level reached a little above 5 feet when it was done.

Lakeview. This part of town was underwater for the better part of a month. In the wee hours of the morning, I think this was about 6:30 a.m. or so, after we had already been there for 45 minutes, it actually looks like it's just a neighborhood. Not quite.
Inside the Lakeview house. This is a very typical scene - furniture floated and broken apart, mold growing on every surface and all of the wood buckled and bulging from the water. Trashy trash trashed.

A panoramic of a street. I think, I'm not certain, that if you double-click the picture you can get a bigger version of it. If not...well, it's pretty much trashed, so you're not missing much if it doesn't expand.

Lakeview is trashed. This picture is on Fleur De Lis opposite a friend's house. The friend's house. Notice the water lines right below the gutters - the whole house is going to have to be demolished.

That about says that. This sign is right behind the smashed up truck, you can see it in the other picture if you look closely.
This flier was handed out to us by some National Guardsmen when we were in New Orleans the Tuesday before Rita came. Thank God they weren't right about the other hurricane behind Rita.
Ok, I confess I stole these two helicopter pictures from corknola.com, another good mid-city blog, but they are about 1 mile from the mid city house, so freak me out. One should not have downed military helicopters in one's neighborhood. Just not couth.
You can see the helicopter and American Can Company right behind it on Bayou St. John. This is all right next to Mercy Hospital.

Ok, this'll be it for a day or so. I have some pictures of Lakeview I was going to term "after pictures" but since it re-flooded again after Rita went past, maybe just post-Katrina, waters receded number first time. Not quite as short as "after pictures." I hope these are helpful to everyone.

The view off of the West End Exit of the interstate - the first evacuation point my family was taken to. If you look at the right middle of the picture you can see the pumping station which isn't doing much of anything at the time. The front porch, about 12 feet off the driveway, the driveway is about 3 feet higher than the street. You can see the seat on the bass boat that's moored to the porch.
The street when the water was almost finished rising (still had about a foot to go).

Mona's on Banks and S. Scott right after the storm, before the waters rose. The porch from the last picture is less than 150 feet from Mona's, same level. It eventually came up to the sign. The street when the waters were finished rising. Actually very pictaresque if you can block the billions of dollars of property damage out.

I photo-shopped this picture to just change the left side to black and white which was flooded. This was taken by my little brother on the Thursday after Katrina first hit near mid-city.

This blog is just to put up pictures I have from New Orleans that I've had to email out before. Think of it as a repository more than an informative web log. We have two houses, one on S. Scott Street near Banks and Carrollton, and the other in Lakeview near Filmore and Canal Blvd. Most of the pictures are around those two areas, but there are also some in other parts of mid-city and lakeview and probably more as they become available. All the pictures are from me or my family, not culled from the internet. Y'all enjoy.
